About Albrecht Durer

Born 1471 Nuremberg Germany
Died 1528 Nuremberg Germany

German

Movement/Period: Renaissance

Workshop/Studio: Nuremberg Germany

Albrecht Durer was born in Nuremberg Germany and as an artist of the Northern Renaissance, created art that is both intellectual and based on the observation of nature. Durer's precision, starkness and anatomical angularity are consistent with a German or Northern style from this period.
What sets Durer apart from his Northern contemporaries and predecessors is his desire to absorb the artistic qualities of Italy and disseminate it through his own art.

Durer visited Italy and was attracted to the monumentality, simplification, structure and use of light and atmosphere in the work of the Italian artists. Upon returning to Germany, Durer would attempt to infuse his work with his observations.

In addition to drawing and painting, Durer excelled as a graphic artist and created engravings and woodcuts in multiples that he distributed throughout Europe. Printmaking was the ideal medium for Durer to express his ideas and also reach a diverse audience.
