About Rembrandt van Rijn

Born July 15 1606 Leyden Netherlands
Died October 4 1669 Amsterdam Netherlands

Dutch

Movement/Period: Baroque

Workshop/Studio: Leyden until 1631 and Amsterdam 1632-1669

Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn is one of the Dutch Masters of the 17th century Baroque. He was born in Leyden, although he would later move and establish his studio in Amsterdam.

Rembrandt's art is a penetrating study of human emotions, reflected in his many portraits and religious paintings, drawings and etchings.

In Rembrandt's later work, his handling of paint becomes increasingly free and spontaneous, with light set against deep shadows, fluid brushstrokes, impasto and the occasional use of a palette knife, he creates a paint surface of marvelous visual richness. These technical qualities along with Rembrandt's powers of observation, knowledge and feeling elevate Rembrandt's art to the highest order.

Rembrandt was financially successful as an artist initially, but in time he accrued substantial debt, was involved in legal disputes and had to file for bankruptcy.
