About MICHELANGELO

Died February 17 1564 Rome Italy

Italian

Movement/Period: High Renaissance and Mannerism

Workshop/Studio: Florence, Rome

Michelangelo Buonarroti was an Italian sculptor, painter and architect. As a High Renaissance artist, Michelangelo's early art was idealized, seeking perfection that is particularly evident in the beautiful proportions of his sculpture, the Pieta of 1498 and David of 1503.

In Michelangelo's later work it would exhibit Mannerist tendencies consistent with turning inward, meaning a psychological focus on oneself. This can be seen in the thick-waisted, exaggerated, tormented figures of the Last Judgement fresco ( pigment applied to wet plaster ) and the torsion, detachment and polish of the sculpture Victory.

Michelangelo's drawings reflect the beauty, process and power indicative of Michelangelo's art in all media that he worked.

Although he was born in Caprese, Tuscany, he lived most of his life in Florence and Rome. His painting of the Sistine Ceiling, depicting passages from the bible is one of the monumental achievements in all of art. Nearly thirty years later, he would finish his painting of the Last Judgement, also in the Sistine Chapel for Pope Paul III who embraced the work and was aware of its magnificence. The Last Judgment was an opportunity for Michelangelo to demonstrate his ability for working with the nude in a variety of positions. Unfortunately, shortly after Michelangelo's death in 1564 ( Pope Paul III had died in 1549 ) prudishness would account for drapery being painted over areas of the nudes that were found offensive.

Letters written by Michelangelo and other accounts by those who knew him, portray him as a sensitive, caring, loyal, devoted and deeply religious man. His art is genius and he is one of the giants in the history of Visual art.
