About Peter Paul Rubens

Born 1577 Belgium
Died 1640 Antwerp Belgium

Flemish

Movement/Period: Baroque

Workshop/Studio: Antwerp Belgium

Peter Paul Rubens, the Flemish Master working in Antwerp, Belgium created his own form of Baroque Expression. Swirling movement, strong diagonals and violent action characterize many of Rubens most powerful compositions.

Rubens' depiction of the nude embody physicality, energy and the forces of nature, brought to life by his exceptional draughtsmanship. He was also an outstanding portrait artist evidenced by his drawings and paintings of not only nobility, but his family members which possess an exquisite sensitivity. These contrasts of Rubens' talent reflect an artist of tremendous intellectual and creative gifts.

Rubens was highly successful financially and employed a large workshop to help meet the demands of his many artistic commissions.
