About Vermeer

Born 1632 Delft Netherlands (Christened Joannis 10/31/1632)
Died December 14 1675 Delft Netherlands

Dutch

Movement/Period: Baroque

Workshop/Studio: Delft Netherlands

The art of Jan Vermeer of Delft focuses on everyday life, capturing its beauty in the simplest of actions. Vermeer's art is one of stillness, order, proportion, balance and contemplation that becomes transcendent through flawless technique, lighting, content, composition and the intangible. Standing before Vermeer's greatest works leaves an impression that one has had a profound experience.

Vermeer's process of painting required considerable time and his output of paintings being small made it impossible to generate the income necessary to support his large family.

Difficulty earning a living plagued Vermeer throughout his short life and he died destitute. Although Vermeer's art was highly regarded during his life, after his death he would soon be forgotten. It would take over two hundred years for Vermeer to be rediscovered and his artistic genius appreciated.
